About Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park protects 12 miles of the deepest, most dramatic section of the Gunnison River canyon, where dark-colored Precambrian rock creates sheer walls that drop up to 2,722 feet. The narrow canyon receives so little sunlight that it appears perpetually dark, giving the park its name. The South Rim offers spectacular overlooks, while the more remote North Rim provides solitude and unique perspectives of this geological wonder.
